Privacy notices

Privacy notices help protect personal information and are a critical part of keeping victims of domestic abuse, stalking and sexual abuse safe. A clear, accessible privacy notice helps survivors understand what information an organisation collects, why it is needed, and how it will be protected. The UK Information Commissioner’s Office (ICO) emphasises that privacy notices must explain data types collected, lawful bases, sharing practices and retention in simple, transparent language, ensuring people know exactly where they stand when seeking support.

For victims escaping abuse, even a small data handling error can place them at serious risk. Recent ICO warnings highlight how improper sharing of addresses or personal details has, in some cases, exposed victims to further harm and forced emergency relocations. These incidents underline the life‑saving importance of robust data protection practices and clear communication about how information is handled.

A strong privacy notice reassures victims that their data is safeguarded, access is restricted, and information will only be shared when necessary—for example, to protect someone’s life or meet legal safeguarding duties. It also empowers individuals by explaining their rights, how to raise concerns, and how their privacy is prioritised at every step.

A clear privacy notice is more than compliance—it is a vital part of safety, trust, and protection.
