Turning experience into purpose
Originally from Latvia, Evelita moved to England 16 years ago. Her journey hasn’t always been easy. Having experienced domestic abuse herself without access to support, she understands just how important it is to have someone there during difficult times.
Today, that experience shapes her purpose.
“I wanted to support people going through difficult situations and help create a safe, welcoming environment where they feel valued and supported.”
Latvia’s passion for helping others and giving back to the community has become the foundation of her volunteering journey.
Evelita has been volunteering for the past three years, providing vital support to women, families, and refugees. Her role focuses on creating a positive, calm environment where people can feel safe, express themselves, and build connections.
A typical day might include running craft activities, offering support to individuals affected by domestic abuse, and helping refugees feel welcomed and included.
“It’s about creating a space where people can relax, connect, and express themselves creatively.”
Supporting through connection
In her role, Evelita offers much more than practical help. Whether she’s assisting with crafts, providing encouragement, or offering translation support, her presence helps people feel seen and understood.
Her favourite moments come from seeing the impact first-hand:
“Seeing people smile, grow in confidence, and feel comfortable enough to open up and connect with others.”
These moments highlight the power of simple acts of kindness and the importance of creating spaces where people can truly be themselves.
Volunteering has been a journey of growth for Evelita as well. Through her experiences, she has developed a wide range of skills, including communication, empathy, teamwork, patience, and active listening.
“It has also increased my confidence in supporting others.”
These skills not only help her in her volunteer role but also enrich her personal and professional life.
A Meaningful Impact
For Evelita, the most important part of volunteering is the difference she can make during someone’s most challenging moments.
“I’m most proud of being able to make people feel welcome, supported, and comfortable during difficult times.”
The most rewarding aspect of her work is seeing the positive impact that care and creativity can have on wellbeing.
“Kindness, creativity, and support can have such a positive impact on someone’s confidence.”
Her work shows that even small gestures, a smile, a conversation, a shared activity, can help rebuild confidence and create lasting change.
More than volunteering
For Evelita, volunteering is more than just giving her time, it’s about connection, growth, and making a difference.
“Volunteering has been a meaningful experience that has allowed me to support others, build connections, and make a positive difference in people’s lives.”
A Message to Others
To anyone considering volunteering, Evelita has a simple message:
“Go for it — it’s a chance to learn new skills, meet amazing people, and make a real difference in your community.”
This Volunteers’ Week, Evelita’s story reminds us that volunteering is not just about helping others, it’s about creating hope, building community, and turning lived experience into a force for good.
